Ah, this week's winner of the Golden Boot Award was a very tough call...and that is a good thing. Several magicians turned in solid efforts with only a single sub and down to ten men midway through the first half (thanks Trent). The strong effort was necessary and a relief considering some of the sorry-ass soccer we have been putting on the field in the second half of the season.
The post game voting centered on two candidates: Reed 'I will be There' Sheenan and Henry 'The Deliverer' Barsch. Reed threw his hat in the ring soon after Trent's ejection with some execellent and timely goalkeeping. With a tenuous 2-0 lead and a man down. The opposition had a direct kick from about twenty-two yards out. The striker hit a flat low ball to the near post. Reed dove to his right and knocked the ball wide....right to an on-rushing Juantalaun player that hit a good shot that Reed rejected from the squat position. To top it off, the ball was again deflected into center of the penalty box. Jumping quickly (no kidding....'quickly') to his feet he deflected the well-taken shot over the post. Great job maning the nets Irish boy!
Partly for the herculean 'no-sleep' effort and partially because he had a hat- trick the previous week and didn't get the boot, 'The Deliverer', earned the right to hang 'The Boot' from his rear-view mirror for two weeks until the semi-finals begin.
Not only did mister Barsch have two goals, the second of which was an great header off a cross from Virgis (should have been a goal for Erich), he was a defensive stalwart in the center of the field and often 'made himself big'. He was tough to get around (not a reference to his weight). In addition to his strong defensive stance, he made sound, simple, successful passes for the majority of the game. A well-deserved stinky, used futbol boot for you Henry Barsch, well done!
Who wants it next game, I see something..............
