The cicadas were singing loudly to Das Magic F.C. in the Conkey forest perserves as the game began. The week's rain softened the freshly cut pitch that was perfect for a match, except about four hundred square feet large then the club is used to playing on. This ended up working to our advantage as we spread the field and used the open space to knock the ball around with a minimum of pressure from 'Warta F.C.'
The set up to the match was that the second division's two undefeated teams were to clash for the top of the table. The resulting game was a bit less dramatic, but, was not without some creative play and solid defending from our favorite club.
With Tommy V out with a pulled hammy, Bobby V nursing a strained calf, Trent out coaching our regular defensive crew was definitely depleated. No need to worry, Tommy W and Jimmy did some tag-team sweeping along with (the late arriving) fulton plugged up the middle. Herbie, Eddy, Alex, Adrian and Johnny all rotated on the defensive wings with solid games. In spite of this, a midfield breakdown resulted in a 1-0 deficit early in the first half off a well taken shot in the side netting by the challangers. That would be all their scoring on that day, but, Das Magic was only getting started.
After going down a goal, Das pressed with increased urgency. At one point we held the ball inside the thirty will several consecutive passes, shots and corner kicks. The 'bending' opponent finally 'broke' when Chris B. stuffed a well placed twenty-two footer on the ground to the keeper's right side. Das Magic took a 2-1 lead on sweet, quick give and go between Chris B. and Nick R (in between coaching and a softball game) that resulted in a burning twenty foot left footer in the side netting. Timmy N. rounded out the scoring late in the second with a header...err..chest..um...hip...ah knee ball goal from a corner kick. The final was 3-1 in favor of the good guys.
DM adjusted well to the big field and the game left a good taste in the mouth... Back at the forest perserver for another midday game next week. See you there!
