WrapUp from 10-14-2007 Semi-Finals

The semifinal match day for the second division of the National Soccer League started a bit sketchy for Das Magic...

Two hours before the 2pm kickoff against Real Independent at Conkey Fields, there were only eight Das players confirmed to play. With several players travelling, a bunch working and some that just didn't respond to phone calls, Manager Vucinic was biting his nails. As a matter of fact, when Mary Ann wished us luck, I responded, 'I just hope we have eleven!'. Turns out, we had fourteen including two new signees: Ben Shepherd and Alex Blinder, and a 'witching hour' pick up in Vinnie (formerly of xavier). Oh yea, Virgis was there too, watching the game and drinking beer, out of uniform; thanks Virgis!

Although we started out passing the ball relatively well in the defense and midfield, we couldn't connect with the offense. When we did, Real's defenders always seemed to get a head or toe stuck out that they needed. Still, the opposing offense kept pressure on Das. Their first goal to put them in the lead happened after three solid defensive plays with the ball repeatedly bouncing out of the reach of Das Magic and back to Real. The ball just refused to be cleared. Finally, they got off a decent cross from the touchline and scored on an easy header. Not long after, there was a scrum in front of the Das Magic goal with three short range shots repelled by this week's goalie, and eventual Golden Boot Winner, Anton Jenij. Not only were they great saves, they kept us from going down 2-0 and giving the opposition more confidence.

There wasn't a strong response from Das magic, so the game continued in an uneventful stalemate for the next twenty minutes or so. Still, will continued solid defense from Trent, Alex E. and Fulton, Das held off any attacks. After pushing forward,Das was awarded a direct kick from about twenty-five out. The shot by Alex B. took a huge hop in front of the 5' 3" goalie and bounced off the crossbar. If not for the charging follow up of Erich G.M. (D.R.), the ball might have been harmlessly recovered by the goalie or cleared by the defense. Erich did whatevery coach tells you, 'follow the shot!'. After tying the game at 1-1, Das continued to pressure Real, with a steaming left-footed full volly off a cross from the left wing they just missed to the goalie's right post. Goal number two came from Henry B. by tucking a crossed ball passed the keeper from the six (anton said, 'thank god the goalie was shorter than tim kennedy'). Timmy N. cemented the victory by taking a breakaway off a quick volly outlet pass from Trent down the left side and into the goal. Timmy tallied again minutes later to pad his stats.

Das finished with a 4-1 victory in the semi final match to move them into the championship of the NSL (2nd Division) against FC Transylvania on October 21st. Will be an interesting rematch against the team we tied the first week of the season.
