On Sunday, April 26th, Das Magic kicked off its third season in the National Soccer League and its second in the first division. Some of the 'classic' players are now spectator, and there are some new faces. Welcome to the club to Mike K, Bruno, Johnathon 'Irish', Gerry ('Irish') and Al.
After a rainout cancelled all the league's original opening day games, this weekend game was also in doubt. Thanks to the Das Magic Dome being set up on a hill, the fields was still in very good condition.
The Assyrian team Khaboor FC showed up late. Meanwhile, uncharacteristically, when arriving at the field thirty minutes prior to the match, there was already four magicians waiting. By game time, we had a full roster with a couple more trickling in around half time.
With a strong south-north cross wind blowing, the game kicked-off about ten after two. In the first half, the trapping was suspect and the passing off target. In spite of these issues, Das Magic generated three or four solid opportunities to score. As has long been a problem, converting the chances was not happening. On the positive side, our defense held strong and didn't allow any good scoring opportunities.
The second half started with a 0-0 deadlock. Das started knocking the ball around and creating more scoring chances. A couple good saves and some slightly off target attempts left both squads with nothing to show for the effort. In what was almost the sweetest Das goal in years, Nick R trapped a goal kick from four feet in the air with his left instep. He quickly knocked the ball to his left and from thirty meters, cracked a half volly that deflected off both the crossbar and post on the far side of the net. SWEET!
Finally, with only minutes remaining in the match, Timmy 'Bulldog' Neighbors took a ball from the left side and cut inside to beat the keeper on the near post that locked up the Golden Boot Award! The 1-0 lead held up for the final and the first win of the 2009 season.
