A perfect fall morning in September that felt much more like the middle of summer. The comfortable old 10am start time had Das Magic feeling right at home. With a full squad to start and a hockey stick for our southwest corner flag, Das Magic started well and put the screws to a surprising Stare Byke Blue. Not having won a single game, they were young, tall, fast and not without some talent.
The defense held fast in the first half, while Das Magic's midfield and forwards were significantly younger than usual. With AJ and Paulie H showing and Henry and Erich away with family obligations, our AAI (Average Age Index) was probably leaning toward the late twenties. It hasn't been below thirty-three for years!
Still, all this youth, fitness, height and strength was irrelevant. Our oldest, 'not quite fit' and 'height-challenged' Magician scored the first goal to put us ahead 1-0. Herbie came through strong on a deflection and headed the ball down hard out of the keeper's reach.
Late in the first half, Josh scored another sweet goal on a full-volly. The ball was crossed into the goal mouth on a short corner and was headed out to the top of the penalty area to the left of the goal. He measured a left-footer and buried it to the near post with a finish that left the goalie confused (note: AJ claims that he deflected it with his head. I didn't see it, but, it could have happened)
Just before the half time whistle, fortune shined on Team Byke Blue when a deflected clearance landed at the foot of one of their forwards. He was in an offside position, but, the deflection negated that call. His below average finish rolled left of Reed's outstretched hand. From that point, the rotating defense locked up their house and no more decent chances were to be found for the opposition.
While Das was outplaying Blue, the narrow, one goal lead kept everyone on their collective toes. Alex B relaxed the Magic boys with a great knock in on a corner kick from Jimmy. The cross went over the keeper's head to the far post. Alex beat his defender to the pelota, stretched with is right foot, getting a piece of the ball and punching it back into the netting. Another excellent goal for Alex, who, along with Josh, is having a tremendous goal-scoring season. Keep it up boys!
The 3-1 victory puts us in second place behind Stare Byke Red. This is the squad with lost 1-0 on the bad referee call....This week is Prijedor. A decent squad and important match. Let's finish strong boys!Cheers and lets enjoy the rest of the matches!
