First of all, thanks to the players that made it out for the late Sunday game on Mother's day, from the back: Reed, Tommy V (with no ACL, playing on one leg), Filip V, Bernado, Johnny M, Irish, Chad and Gerry 'Irish' (and me) ....that is how we started. Then arriving at about eight minute intervals....Fulton, Nick Roe, Tommy Waters and Ben S got there at halftime. It was a tough day with a tough time and glad we filled the field...it was a big one: 120 x 70.
Things did not look great with the late kickoff and only eight players taking the huge field for Das. We planned on packing the middle because there was four more players on their way either lost or late. That is what we did for the first fifteen minutes. Tirana was trying to chip the defense from the center of the field and had a few decent shots that Reed controlled nicely. After a turnover and scrum at the eighteen, the opponent pushed a ball passed the Das defense to a player in an offside position who knocked it in. After a short bout of complaints, Irish and Gerry took the kickoff and went like 'dis-dis-dis-dis-and goal' from the kickoff. About midway through the first half, the game was knotted 1-1. In short order a run and near post shot and a header put Das behind the eight ball going into half time with a 3-1 deficit. The good news was even before Ben had arrived at half time, the Das offense was beginning to find its form and was pressuring and creating some excellent chances to make this a game.
Ben make his presents known almost immediately. Along with Gerry, Irish and Nick, they were too much to handle. This huge field was giving us a ton of space to move the ball and create opportunities. After a great move and errant shot, Ben's did not disappoint on his next chance. Irish crossed the ball in to the middle and Ben stuck a spinning chip shot, playing the defender and goalie perfectly with a delacate touch to bring us within one at 3-2. Disappointingly, the defense surrendered another one man effort goal that should have never happened...but it did!
