The first time we played this team, it was their home 'field'. I put 'field' in quotes because it was dirt down the middle, short grass for ten yards and finally, thick grass along the hard to see lines. To top it off, there was sand in front of the nets! This is no excuse, we all played like shit and they scored a last minute goal to win the match. Quite a disappointment considering the lack of experience and talent on their team (Wing Bull).
This past week presented different challanges. We started with eleven players and were expecting three to leave at half for coaching and family responsibilities. The good news is that two more players showed up, the bad news, four left at intermission.
They 'younger lads' started strong and continued to pour it on. I don't even know who scored, except that I am sure it wasn't Paulie. In his last week of bachlorhood, he was over served and didn't make it up for the game. Too bad, he could have easily notched two or three easy goals and really put up some amazing numbers for leading goal scorer in our division. Regardless, they boys still put away five goals in the beginning fourty-five minutes and we took a 5-0 lead into the locker room.
With so many leaving, we pulled Fergie out of retirement and Reed out of the goal so we could have at least nine field players instead of eight. The final score of 5-4 leaves the impression the game was close, it was not. We missing five or six very easy opportunities to score, still with less than ten minutes to play, we will still leading 5-2. A strange choice by our goalie soon made it 5-3. With about two minutes remaining, Bob V committed a mindless, undefendable, intentional handball on the edge of the penalty box. They converted to finish the match 5-4.
