Well, it wasn't supposed to be the last game of the season. It shouldn't have been the last game of the season....still a little pissed it was the "last game of the season".
After winning the first game of the round robin tourney with a solid victory, the post game talk was disconcerting. Chad and Nick were going to be at the Bears game. Ben was away, Irish had to coach as some point. Jimmy and Tommy (and Eddy) would be in Florida for St.Xavier's soccer trip. Fulton was out, Reed was in Vegas. Playing the first place team in the other division (Brusfa) was going to be a challange anyway you cut it.
Gerry arranged his work schedule to work in the morning and evening so he could play the match (we need more of this from the rest of the team). Irish got someone to coach part of this game so he can make the second half (Thanks guys!). Paulie, Trent, Chris, Mitch, Alex, Erich, Ian, Virgis, Alex's buddy Carlos, and don't forget Fergie made up the squad for the semi final match.
Not five minutes in, Fergie puts us ahead with a 'right time, right place' finish after a scrum in front of the net. Unrostered, Fergs trotted off the field and Erich remained. Erich put in another solid fourty minutes that we needed until Irish could show up. The one goal lead held for about twenty minutes. Brusfa tied up the match with direct kick about twenty-five out. It was a well hit ball, but, we didn't set up completely and nobody was on the ball to slow things down.
We dominated play the rest of the half, but, after a bullshit call on the sideline, an indirect kick was awarded. The cross to the top of the box was a well-won header will an even better finger-tip save by Ian. Unfortunately, the rebound was an own goal to put the challangers up 2-1 going into half.
We came out strong in the second half and generated several goal scoring opportunities. Soon, the dam broke and we tied it up 2-2 on a Chris R finish. Not long after that, Paulie had a break away and shot, got his own rebound, shot again, got his own rebound and as he was falling out of bounds, spun while he was falling and finally scored to put us in the lead 3-2. The game continued into the cool evening with their defense and goalie pushing way up in an effort to score the game tying goal. Our defense kept them at bay and didn't allow a single 'good' shot on goal. We counter attacked seven or eight times with break aways that we just couldn't put away.
After asking for time remaining and being signalled two minutes, we held our continued to hold our ground; repelling all offensive attacks. At least four minutes later, we were still playing. After letting a handball go in our offensive end, a last second shot hit Virgis' arm, they converted the penalty to tie the match three minutes past what should have been the end of Brusfa's season.
With no subs and a much older team, Das Magic's prospects looked bleak in the two fifteen minute overtimes. That assement proved correct when we went down a goal five minutes in on a fluke falling away back heal after a favorable bounce slithered though Ian's legs. Never saying die, we continued to push forward and pressure. Irish made the effort worthwhile when he scores off a give go with Mark under the falling goalie's arms.
Now, only minutes remained and it looked like penalty kicks were inevitable, which would definitely have favored Das. It was not to be as a simple pass by me to the inside was 'toed' directly into the path of their fastest player. He converted his one on one with Ian to finish the match 5-4.
The only redeeming fact is that they lost 9-2 in the championship match!See you next season. (...or, preferrably, Wednesday practice in the gym)
