I cannot remember the last time Das Magic was winning a game by two goals (3-1) and ended up losing, but, it happened this weekend. A precarious mix of Ol' timers (Anton, Jimmy, Bob) and some first timers worked pretty well in the first half; at least well enough to give us a 2-1 lead after conceding the first goal. By the way, it was great to see Jimmy (Who?) and Anton on the pitch, always a pleasure (well...most of the time).
After going down 1-0 early in the match, we gained control and were attacking from all angles. Dillon pushed the ball up the left side and crossed the ball on the ground to Paulie waiting at the far side. A quick trap and shot tied up the match. Not long after, a drop pass to Paulie at the right produced the go ahead goal. We took the 2-1 lead in to the break.
The heat added to the lasting effects of Chad/Reeds bachelor party at the Forge the night before had us thinking: 'hang on'. The situation improved when a Das-Alternate put away a great finish in increase the lead for a 3-1 tally. If we could have held them off for about ten minutes, FC Moldova would have been finish. Alas, a crazy touch and bounce tightened the match at 3-2. Not long after, a great save was nullified by a rebound goal that knotted us at 3-3.
On the smaller field that chances kept coming for both sides. Mostly, they were shooting from 18-20 yards out while we were working down the end lines and crossing the ball in for headers or deflections. They were defensively solid and their goalie made several good saves to keep us out of the next. Finally, a ball kicked long into our territory that was heading out of bounds was chased down and crossed into the box. It was converted for a final losing score of 4-3.
Next week at the forest perserve @ 135th/Central again with our favorite start time: 3 pm.
