Game two in the three game, seven day series started with perfect weather on a Thursday night, Erich in the goal and several fans (Eddy, Fergie, Jimmy, brother Mike and Ihor to name a few) to watch (and drink).
With the clock approaching nineteen hundred hours, and no ref in sight, I recruted one of the best referees in the league. Attired in his postal uniform, Ihor Prokip
We were going up against high schoolers that were fast and fit. We lost the first match in the series 3-0. It was our opener and we had few of the regulars. They were not very impressive. This squad had two or three 'new' players in the midfield that were giving us fits.
Playing the flat back four, we were defending well. But, following our seasonal pattern, a shot that went off the crossbar was headed home to put us down 1-0 in the first twenty minutes.
As the first half finish, neither team really had much going offensively as the lion-share of the play was in the middle of the field. In the closing minutes, Das was starting to gell a bit and a few goal scoring opportunites presented them- selves, nothing was converted.
We continued to push and play better as a team in the second half. We limited their opportunities so Erich could have some time to enjoy his beer. We finally broke through with about twenty minutes remaining when Jonathon's corner kick found me on the back side of the net for a header.
Looking to break the 1-1 tie, we kept the pressure on and worked the sidelines while limiting opportunites on the other end. With less then ten minutes remaining, Nick broke left around two players and launch a left-footed game winner past a helpless keeper.
Unfortunately, as time was running out, Paulie got caught with another players head or elbow (not sure which) above the right eye. Too bad for him, he was actually back, helping out the defensein the waning moments of the match. The doctors gave him seven stiches (it was a deep cut) and he is ready for Baraboo.
Lets keep this going on Sunday against the number two Albanians.
