Well, a few of us arrived at the home field by 8:30 (weird huh?....(not me)), the sprinklers were on. An hour later, the sprinklers were still on (as a matter of fact, they were still on at 11am). The decision was made to move to the astoturf (old guy term) field. We even pulled Erich out of semi- retirement to tend the goal.
The Dynasty were a young Hispanic team with four or five subs; we are an old(er), mix-race team with zero substitutes. It was going to be a long morning... With the numbers for the last two games (12 and 11 respecitvely), it almost seems like many of you think the season is over. If I didn't recently sign our newest Cougar alumn and Bosnian Internations (Edo/Sinsa), we would have only had nine!!!
The game was going pretty well. We were holding off the attacks, but it was taking its toll, we are not exactly the most fit team in the league, certainly not fit enough to place an entire match at a high level without any substitutes. The ref was making some 'unusual' calls. A direct kick was given from about thirty out. A guy that played for us in Baraboo this year bent a very nice shot to the upper right corner: 1-0. Not ten minutes later, they took a ball endline and the same dude was a late comer and was all alone on the far post for an easy header: 2-0.
Our prospects were not looking great until I put in a corner kick on the back post to narrow the difference to 2-1. Soon after, a kick from about thirty-five was lightly brushed by Edo and by the keeper to bring us level at 2-2. We were happy, but, very tired.
They continued to come at us with young fresh legs and we let in goals three and four. Two down with about twenty minutes to play, Chad found me on the far post for another header off the corner to tighten things up at 4-3. I am very proud to say we were in this match and not giving up. They had a few chances as we pushed forward, but, so did we. An injured Trent moved forward and had a nice left-footed volly that was well saved and a few other close calls. In the closing minute, a breakaway resulted in a goal to finish the game, and us, at 5-3.
