Hmm, well, that was interesting....To start with, at game time we had nine players. Hall of Famer, TJ Donahue was preparing to set up in goal (even though he blew out his ACL about two years ago performing the identical feat). The delay of moving from the grass field (faded lines) to the turf gave us enough time to get stragglers Tommy and Fulton. (Oh yea, thanks Henry for showing to play goal!)
Anyway, TJ turned to baby sitter for Edo; Trent dropped back to goal ('Because he played when he was 14'). By the way, Edo walked away with the Golden Boot for showing to the match with is baby daughter so that he could play!
We played solid, especially in the midfield with Jonathon, Chad and Kyle moving the ball decently. As has been our MO the last two years, a turnover turned into a goal, then the 'Lancers' tallied another goal with a cross and mistouch that put Das down 2-0. We should start games 2-0 down to get this shit out of the way. As Chad said after the second goal, 'Now we can start playing...'
The match was back and forth the rest of the first half with us probably having the edge in possession and opportunities, but no goals. They didn't get many opportunities, but, when they did, Trent was making some very solid saves. With minutes left in the half, a Lancer tattooed a half volly left footer from twenty out that went side netting. Unstoppable.
Time after time, that last pass and shot was alluding us, mostly because of tiredness. Early in the second, Mark knocked knees and took away our subs. As we pushed up, we left Trent more and more on his own. He did well with several very good saves, but, eventually, two more made it by him.
Five down, we didn't give up. That is what makes me most proud of this squad. Any other team in this league, you go up three goals and it is over. Chad earned a late penalty with git and heart that Jonathon buried to finish 5-1. Hey, both Spain and Portugal loss in the World Cup by the same margin, so, it wasn't that bad!
We welcomed our second 'legacy' player this week with Anton's son and Erich's nephew, Austin. He follows Kyle in the Das Magic tradition. I need to keep this club going another ten years so Roman can start playing with us.
Let's start the comeback next week at Hawthorne, 2pm.
