At nine o'clock sunday morning, the count was at eight confirmed players. By some miracle, all the 'maybes' turned into 'yeses'. I pulled up fifteen minutes before the match and we already had eight guys warming up. (I wasn't sure I was in the right place....) By game time, we had fifteen players and even a couple fans (thanks Anton and TJ).
We were pressing 'The Lancers' and playing the field's thick grass better than the home team. We hit strong passes while taking away their lightly struck attempts. As happens a bit too often to us, a momentary break-down led to giving up the first goal to the opposition. The 1-0 deficit only inspired us to play better and harder.
We continued to push forward using Josh and Kyle through the midfield while also working the ball in from the wings. Austin used his long-ass throw-in as we crowded the goalmouth. The goalie made an ill-advise attempt to knock the ball away and tipped the indirect throw into the net. Austin's first Das Magic goal carried the 1-1 scoreline into the second half which inspired confidence.
Alex was moving well up front creating space. He finally broke through with his first goal of the season off a quick on-touch pass from Edo to beat the keeper left from about twelve yards out. While Reed wasn't called upon often in goal, he stepped into the Golden Boot Award this week by two or three crucial saves including a saved penalty kick.
Scoring another first Das Magic goal (all three this week were firsts), Chris Donahue poked in a header from near the penatly spot to seal the victory.
