It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon on 95th/Lake Shore Dr. We absolutely needed a win here to have a chance at the playoffs. Despite our desparate circumstances, we were scrounging around to get a full squad to show to the 4pm match. Thankfully, we gathered enough.
The field at Calumet park was huge. Must have been 120 yards by 70, we were ready to run. Edo continued to show his dedication by showing with his traveling baby sitting crew to watch his daughter. These teams were not young as proofed by the fact that the combined ages of the two goalies was 119 (TJ: 54; WI Jets goalie/manager: 65).
When Kyle broke through the defense on a solo run not five minute into the match and beat the goalie to the right, looked like it would be a runaway. But, the goal was called back for a phantom handball that never happened.
Kyle didn't wait long to rectify the situation by finishing a give-go with Mark...using a single touch to finish high and to the right of the keeper.
We continued to press, but, a cleared ball led to a breakaway and a goal against for a 1-1 scoreline. In response, Kyle continued his dominance and took another through ball with a clinic finsh to make it 2-1 Das.
Looked like we would take the one goal lead into half time, but, another attempted clearance turned into a hand-aided breakaway that left TJ with no chance. 2-2 at half time.
About midway through the second, Jonathon buried a dead ball from about twenty-two. The ball perfectly curved over the wall into the upper left side of the goalie. A short time later, a short corner had Edo sending a hard cross into the goal mouth. The curving ball just missed my head, but, not to worry, Kyle was there to tap it in at the far post. Goal number three capped his Golden Boot hattrick and put us out front by two with a 4-2 lead and about ten to play.
As they had been doing all game, they pushed and pulled us around on goal kicks and scored a header by knocking TJ off his feet on a corner to narrow the lead with only a couple minutes left.
After one more tense moment on a final corner for WI Jets, we were left with the victory, a few of our players on the ground and TJ with well bruised ribs.
