Das Magic 1 - F.C. Macedonia 2
So, it was a really hot day and we were playing at noon. Two hours before match time, my count was nine players, at the starting whistle, we ha seventeen (several guys didn't answer their email, but, still showed).
FC Macedonia had a goalie 'retiring' in a quick ceremony at the beginning of the game. So, from the kickoff, we sent the ball to him, he picked it up and the game was stopped to applause for his years on the team. Nice! I thought, that is a nice gesture, Das could never do this, because our guys continue to save us from forfeits and playing short into their 50s. Turns out, the replacement goalie was the best goalie we have ever seen. He made four or five UNBELIVABLE saves and literally saved the game.
We started with the first goal of the game when Austin's buddy Chris took a ball from Bryan and beat the goalie on the near side for a 1-0 lead. We kept the majority of the possession and the opportunities through the first half. Most of their chance were long balls the Reed easily scooped up.
The second half was increase pressure by both sides. A defensive miscue lead to a turnover and a goal in a one v one situation to tie the match at one all.
Then, the opposing keeper really stepped it up to eleven. Stopping great shots by several Das Men. Chris R. had a great shot from the top left of the box to the far right of the goal on the ground toward a screened goalie...saved. Soon after a scramble inside the Chris again made two or three excellent whacks at were knocked away...saved. Later Sean hit a header that had eyes on it for the upper left corner....saved. Irish had a dead-ball over the wall sinking fast in the far right side netting....saved. There were even more. We could have easily lead this match by 4 or 5 goals, it wasn't to be on that day.
Another sloppy defensive breakdown late in the game locked in an extremely disappointing 2-1 loss.
On the plus side, there was picnic on the grounds with music, food and many free beers from an extremely pleased home side.
