Das Magic 6 - Assyrians 2
What a weird couple of days..... Everyone (including me) thought the game was at 11am in Elk Grove against Stara Byki. Turns out, that game is next Sunday. I just happened to check the league website on Thursday and noticed that it was a make up weekend. I quickly called the coach of Assyrians who we were supposed to play the Championship weekend (Baraboo). I secured the field through Chris and the game was set for Sunday @ 10am.
Well, I showed at 9:54am Sunday, and I was the only Das player, followed shortly by Reed. The gate was locked, it was raining and there was some serious traffic issues delaying most everyone. Next, the Assyrian coach didn't show up until after 10:30am and the team wouldn't start to dress until they had the uniforms from their coach (weird)
When the game finally started, is was at least 10:45 and a light drizzle made the playing conditions perfect. Before we even settled in, Paulie took the ball to the goal line and crossed back to Kyle in standing on the six. He headed it past a stunned keeper for a 1-0 lead after only about five minutes.
Kyle continued his Golden Boot play with another goal ten minutes later. Tommy Agua (goal and an assist), one-timed a bad clearance to Kyle heading toward the goal. The defender pushed him right and from the twenty, he nudged a shot to the lower right corner with outside of this right foot. We were up 2-0 and pretty comfortable.
A quick counter attack and nicely placed through-ball by the Assyrians broke down a tough defense anchored by Nick Roe. Outside this goal, he spent the whole match sweeping up the garbage in the defensive end. The lead shrunk to 2-1, but, our play and confidence were at a high level.
Couldn't have been five minutes later when Kyle headed a corner down to the goalie's right and Paulie knocked in the goal to reverse the roles from the first goal. We extended the lead to 3-1.
Because of the late start, we agreed to play fourty minute halves, so we were expecting the time to be up soon, but, that didn't slow us down. Jonathon took a cross from the attacking left side of the field to the far right. He beat a defender and buried a low steamer out of the goalie's reach. The 4-1 lead was comfortable and we were ready to take that to halftime. The ref had other ideas. On a scramble in our own goal mouth, the ref called a contriversial handball and they connverted the penalty to shrink the lead to two goals.
We weren't done either. A perfectly timed through-ball at half field from Mark caught Ben in stride and the sweeper off guard. Ben ran at the goal and finished clinically to reestablish the three goal margin at 5-2 before half.
The second half was a series of unconverted chances until Paulie received the ball on the twelve with two defenders between him and the goalie. He dished left to Tommy that knocked in a left-footed shinball to extend the lead (6-2). Play continued for about fifteen more minutes with a couple close calls on both ends of the field, including a thirty yard chip from the Assyrians that nearly found the upper ninety. Instead, Reed scrambled backward and knocked the ball over the crossbar.
Then, in the strangest finish I think any of us have ever seen, the Assyrian coach told the ref he was quitting and pulled his team off the field despite their protests. Post game, I heard one of their players announcing he is done playing with them. At first, I thought he didn't think the ref was fair or some shit, turns out, he just didn't like losing by that much......
Lets do it again next week to 'Byki'
